Postcard #249

Postcard. Caption on front: Old Gibson School, Columbia Road, Dorchester, Mass. Postmarked Jul 30, 1917. Dorchester Station, Boston. With one cent stamp. On verso: No. B 13534 Published by The New England News Company. Boston, Mass. Leipzig-Berlin.

The Gibson School house on School Street was named in honor of Christopher Gibson, an early donor to the schools of Dorchester. It was built in 1857, a portion of the expense being met by generous gifts from the Hon. Edmund P. Tileston and Roswell Gleason. In 1881 the Gibson School was moved to the Atherton Building on Columbia Road seen in this postcard. Later another building was built for the school at 16 Ronald Street (formerly Bowdoin Avenue). This building was demolished in 1975.
