No. 604: Dorchester Atheneum
Postcard #604

Photograph printed on p. 55 of Dorchester Old and New 1630-1930.

The Dorchester Atheneum was located at the intersecton of Pond, East Cottage and Pleasant Streets where there is now a small park. The building was originally used near Sumner Street as a school. When a new school was built, the members of the Atheneum moved this building to be used as their library and meeting room. A building formerly on this site, called Stoughton Hall, was used for lectures and addresses of the upper classes of that day. See Orcutt's Good Old Dorchester, p. 340.
