No. 9867: Columbia Point map 1889
Postcard #9867

After Dorchester's annexation in 1870, the City of Boston constructed a sewer line to Columbia Point, establishing a pumping station and a tunnel to push the sewage into open water. This detail from the 1889 Bromley map shows the direction of the tunnel. In later years land would be made all the way out to the end of the visible tunnel to accommodate the construction of the University of Massachusetts.
