In the mid seventeenth century, Dorchester achieved its largest territory when it was granted 40,000 acres extending to within a half mile of the Rhode Island line.

 The red line represents Dorchester's boundaries at its largest extent. The straight black line is the boundary between the Plymouth Colony and the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
