The Independence Fire Engine, designated no. 5, was located in Neponset.

This picture is from a postcard mailed in 1910, but the fire station building had probably been constructed at least by the 1870s.

The station was located on Walnut Street next to Lorenzo Street at the entrance to Port Norfolk. There is a small park there today that can be seen as one goes around Neponset Circle.

Photo taken in 1970s and provided by Bob Rugo.

Message from Bob Rugo:

In the interest of historical accuracy, I did not take this photo. I was in the Army in South Carolina in 1969. I did somewhat restore it from a very scratched and faded slide which I believe was taken by Bob DeSimone, my boss at the BRA in the 1970s. We tried unsuccessfully to get the City to not demolish the building.
