42ND MASSACHUSETTS
Infantry
100 days, 1864 Militia


The 26th Regiment of New Jersey Volunteers was organized at Camp Frelinghuysen, Newark, New Jersey and mustered in on September 18, 1862. Attached to 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, VI Army Corps, Army of the Potomac it saw action at Fredericksburg, VA on December 12-15, 1862. Took part in General Burnsides ?Mud March? on January 20-24, 1863. At Chancellorsville, April 27-May 6, 1863, Franklin?s Crossing, April 29, Salem Church, May 3-5. Returned to Washington, DC June 17, 1863. Mustered out at Newark, NJ, June 27, 1863. Philip Sawyer reached the rank of Corporal.

The Forty-second Massachusetts Infantry, 1864 Militia was organized at Readville, MA to serve for 100 days on July 22, 1864. It was mustered out of service on November 11, 1864.

Listed on the Plaque of the men from the First Methodist Church, Dorchester, Massachusetts, who served in the Civil War.
