W.J. & A.F. Burke

Newcomers in the drug business who have already gained a good and constantly increasing trade—this fine pharmacy is as 122 Harvard Street.

The firm of W. J. & A. F. Burke, apothecaries, at No. 122 Harvard Street, Dorchester, are newcomes to this district, having established their business here in January, 1907.  The partners are brothers and came to Dorchester from Winooski, Vermont, where the senior partner opened a drug store in 1905.  He sold out there and selled here, with his brother, F. A. Burke for his partner.  The store is commodious and exceedingly attractive, with a floor of mosaic cement and hard wood fixtures.  There is handsome soda water fountain in the establishment, made of marble and onyx, and an automatic carbonator and plate glass show cases.  There is an especially fine display of stock in this model store, consisting of pure drugs, chemical, proprietary medicines, sick-room and hospital supplies, rubber goods, perfumes, stationery, tonics, liniments, plaster, salves, cosmetics, druggists’ novelties, etc., in bewildering variety. The firm pays especial attention and care to the compounding of doctors’ prescriptions, permitting no stale or impure ingredients to enter the composition of these mixtures for the sick and feeble.  The prescription work is all done in the well appointed laboratory attached to the establishment.  The partners are assisted by one clerk, J. Edward Daly, Jr.

Both members of the firm are natives of this state.  They are members of the National Association of Retail Druggists and the Boston Association of Retail Druggists and also belong to the Vermont State Pharmacists’ Association and the Knights of Columbus.  They are highly regarded in the community.
