Hackett & Ryan
Dealers in groceries and wines and liquors, 1452 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester
One of the newest firms to claim the patronage of the public in this district is that of Hackett & Ran, whose fine store at No. 1452 Dorchester Avenue, running through to No. 231 Adams Street, was opened in August of this year. The firm deals in choice groceries and fine wines, liquors, beers, ales and liqueurs. The store is one of the handsomest places of business in Dorchester, being 30 by 90 feet in dimensions and 18 feet in height, the highest on the avenue, with a basement attached. The walls and ceiling are covered with metal, the ceiling being painted white. The walls are green, with hard wood wainscoting, thus adding greatly to the beauty of the interior. Fanciful fixtures for gas and electric lighting also add much to the general scheme of decoration and make the place a veritable fairyland at night. Steam heat furnishes warmth for the establishment in cold weather. At the Dorchester Avenue end of the store are the grocery and bottled liquor departments of the business, arranged on new lines. The showcases have all-glass fronts and are lighted by electricity on the inside. There are also immense cases and large refrigerators for butter and other perishable goods which are filled with ice. The firm carries a complete selection of the finest bottled wines, liquors, beers, etc., to be found in the district and also a choice stock of staple and fancy groceries, including butter, cheese, eggs, high grade teas and coffees, canned goods, table delicacies, cereals, breakfast and luncheon dainties, etc., in a variety which is almost limitless. In the liquor department, all kinds of imported and domestic wines, liquors, beers, ales and cordials are to be found, in bottles, cases and in bulk. No bar is attached to the business, the firm catering wholly to the family trade. The Adams Street end of the premises is used for the stock and for the reception of goods which come to the store. The basement is devoted to the purpose of storage for the superfluous stock of various kinds. A staff of nine or more assistants is constantly employed, and all are kept busy from morning until night in attending to the wants of the patrons of the establishment.
Mr. Hackett was born and educated in Boston and has lived in the city all of his life. He is known to many people, has hosts of friends and is popular among all. Mr. Ryan is also a native of Boston. He is a member of several societies and is popular in all circles in which he moves. He has been connected with the grocery and liquor business for a long time and is an expert in the line. Although only lately established, the firm does a large and profitable business and enjoys an enviable reputation in the commercial world and has the confidence of the public.
