Morse Brothers

Oldest grocery house in Grove Hall, 470 Blue Hill Avenue, Roxbury

For the long period of thirty-two years, the firm of Morse Brothers, grocers, No. 470 Blue Hill Avenue, Grove Hall, Roxbury, has been in existence, being the oldest retail establishment iu the Grove Hall region. This business was established in 1875, when Grove Hall, not a prosperous business centre, was little more than a hamlet, where a few people managed to eke out an existence, wholly without convenient trading facilities. The original firm was composed of L. (Lewis) M., H. (Herbert) F. and F. (Frank) W. Morse, and the first store was on the opposite side of the street. The firm remained in its original location until 1888, when it built its present commodious structure. The store is a model of cleanliness and attractiveness and is neatly fitted up and thoroughly appointed in every respect. It carries one of the largest and best assortments of goods in the entire district, including staple and fancy groceries, teas, coffees, spices, butter, cheese, eggs, condiments, table delicacies, flour, sugar, breakfast and luncheon dainties, canned goods, jar goods, preserves, olives, olive oil, pickles, vinegar, molasses, milk, cream, fruits, vegetables, etc., in almost infinite variety and of the highest grade.  There is also a department for the sale of kitchen furnishing goods.  No goods of an inferior quality are every admitted to a place in the stock, and the patrons of the establishment have long learned to depend absolutely upon the quality of every article purchased there.  The prices are as moderate as is consistent with the service rendered.  The establishment gives employment to a large staff of assistants and several wagons for delivery purposes.  The firm also conducts another store at Walnut Avenue and Warren Street, wich antedates the Grove Hall story bi six years, having been opened in 1869, or thirty-eight years ago.

Of the original firm, H. F. and F. W. Morse survive, L. W. Morse having died in 1905.  All three of the brothers were born in Foxboro, this state, and have lived in Roxbury during the course of their business careers.  They are reckoned was public spirited and patriotic citizens.
