Timberlake & Small
High Class Grocery Firm at Junction of Walnut Street and Neponset Avenue.
One of the largest and most important houses in the grocery business in the entire district is that of Timberlake & Small, at the junction of Walnut Street with Neponset Avenue, Neponset, Dorchester. This firm was organized twenty-five years ago and was composed of Louis Timberlake and Sanford Small. Mr. Timberlake died in 1904, and the business is now conducted by his surviving partner, Mr. Small. The concern also operates a similar establishment in Quincy. The store is large and well stocked with a choice selection of goods, consisting of staple and fancy groceries, beef, pork, lard, ham, butter, cheese, foreign and domestic fruits, canned goods, fresh, salt, smoked and pickled fish, lobsters, clams, oysters, etc. The firm gives employment to a large staff of clerks in both stores and maintains eight wagons in the delivery service of each establishment. The Quincy store was opened twelve years ago. The firm is now engaged in building a one-store structure as an addition to the Neponset store, which, when completed, will be devoted to the purpose of selling bottled liquors for which it has secured a license The firm also maintains a large and well arranged storehouse, which is attached to the Walnut Street side of the main building.
Mr. Small is a native of the state of Maine. He belongs to the Odd Fellows and is a member of the Dorchester Driving Club, in which he is popular and active. He is looked upon as one of the leading citizens of Neponset, being interested in public affairs and eager to aid in any movement looking toward the material advantage of the people there. As a business man, Mr. Small I known for his strict sense of honor and integrity ansd as a private individual, he is esteemed for his many amiable qualities.
