256 Ashmont is the Estabrook-Reed House, built ca. 1888 and named after John Estabrook of Estabrook and Sibley, teamsters at several downtown locations, and a later owner in the 1900s, George M. Reed, a State Street lawyer who in 1907 was named justice of the Dorchester District Court. (His widow, Emma, left a small fortune to the Dorchester Historical Society).

256 Ashmont Street was built c.1888 for John Estabrook of Estabrook and Sibley, teamsters at several downtown locations. By the early 1900s, George M. Reed , a State Street lawyer owned this property. In 1907, Reed was named justice of the Dorchester District Court. His widow Emma, left a small fortune to the Dorchester Historical Society.
