256 Ashmont is the Estabrook-Reed House, built ca. 1888 and named after John Estabrook of Estabrook and Sibley, teamsters at several downtown locations, and a later owner in the 1900s, George M. Reed, a State Street lawyer who in 1907 was named justice of the Dorchester District Court. (His widow, Emma, left a small fortune to the Dorchester Historical Society).
