Date of construction: 1877
Based on deed to Mumford is dated in late 1876, and the Boston Directory for 1877 shows he was living on Alban Street.
It appears that after Mumford’s death in August, 1877, the heirs rented the house to tenants, until the sale of the property to Thomas A. Dolan in November, 1903.
The following is from Ashmont by Douglass Shand-Tucci, p. 98
But a much deeper setback, in the manner of Beaumont Street, is essayed at 35 Alban, the Mumford House, and at 25 Alban, the Twitchell House. (The former, a Stick Style house architecturally interesting for its “picket frieze” around the top of the facade, was for many years, “Mrs. Mumford’s Finishing School for Young Ladies,” run by Mrs. T. J. Mumford, a minister’s widow, and to which presumably young women graduated from Carruth, Conant, and Kittredge’s Ashmont Private Day School!
[note that Thomas J. Mumford, b. June 26 1826, d. August 29, 1877 was pastor of the Third Church of Dorchester for eight years in the late 1870s. He had been an anti-slavery advocate. In the Life and Letters of Thomas J. Mumford: With Special Memorial Tributes, there is a comment on p. 115 “At the new house on Alban Street, Dorchester, into which, with his family, he had so lately moved …”
