Dorchester Awning Co.

Makers of blankets, wagon covers, etc., 1548-1558 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester

An instance of the remarkable growth of a Dorchester manufacturing industry within the space of a few years is shown by the progress which the Dorchester Awning Company, at Nos. 1548-1558 Dorchester Avenue, has made since its establishment on Jan. 1, 1901.  At that time, the company occupied modest and somewhat contracted quarters at No. 309 Hancock Street, the dimension of which were only 18 by 60 feet.  In the intervening time, the business of the company became so largely increased that larger accommodations became an absolute necessity, and on Sept. 1, 197, the concern removed to its present desirable and adequate building on Dorchester Avenue.  It now utilizes a one–story and basement brick structure, 50 by 67 feet in dimensions, which is equipped with electric power.  The basement is devoted to the purposes of a machine shop, where the  ironwork required for awnings is fashioned thoroughly and accurately.  The ground floor is used for office, show room and factory purposes. From 18 to 20 men are employed in the works. The firm manufactures street and stable blankets for horses, brown, waterproof, duck horse covers, waterproof wagon covers and wagon boots, padded piano covers and slings, and ten: and awnings of every description. The company’s patronage comes from all parts of Massachusetts, and its products are in great and constant demand from one end of the state to the other. It supplied the awning for the roof garden of St. Mary’s Infant Asylum and the awning for Berkeley Chambers, on Boylston street; the Navarre, on Columbus Avemue; the Hotel Denmark; the Hotel Copley, and many other similar establishments in this city. A specialty is made of canopies for weddings. The company’s output has a high reputation foe beauty and serviceableness and stands in the front rank with the awning products of the country. All of the members of the company are natives of Sweden and are thoroughly practical and highly skilled in their line of manufacture.
