Garland & Son
Groceries and Prrovisions, Corner Washington and Euclid streets., Nathaniel W. Garland.
This business enterprise is one of the oldest and best known grocery houses in Dorchester and is the oldest grocery business on Washington Street. The business was founded twenty-nine years ago, or in 1871, by S Williams and Nathaniel W Garland. it was originally located opposite the old car stables and afterward next door to the present store, where Bailey’s hardware store now is. In 1878, the firm dissolved, and Mr. Garland continued business in the old stand up to the time of his death in 1890. In the meantime, he had taken his son, Nathaniel W Garland, Jr., into the firm, which became Garland & Son.. Since the senior Garland’s death, the son has continued the business alone under the old firm name. About nine years ago, the store was moved into the new and larger quarters now occupied. The house is not only the oldest grocery house on the street, but carries one of the finest stocks of choice groceries and provisions to be found in Dorchester. Certainly no store in the district can exceed it for fine and fancy goods. The store itself is also well worthy of attention. It is fitted up in excellent taste and always presents a handsome and inviting appearance. Here is to be found an attractive display of choice., fancy groceries, the equal of the finest sock in Dorchester and which offers substantial inducements both as to price and quality. In bottled and canned goods, fine table delicacies of every kind, the house has no superior in the district. In the provisions department, the meats are always of prime quality, and all the provisions are of the best brands in the market. The house has a fine trade with leading families of Do9rcheste. Twelve people are employed, and every convenience is had for the pr9ompt and efficient conduct of the business. Mr. Garland is well and favorably known to the business and social life of his district and has many friends and acquaintances who esteem him as a business man and citizen.
