John J. Healy & Co.
Well-known and enterprising wholesale and retail liquor dealers of Dorchester—recently moved into their new building, 1356, 1358 Dorchester Ave., and 6 and 8 Kimball Street
One of the largest and most important wholesale and retail liquor houses in the entire city of Boston is that of John J. Healy & Co. at Nos. 1356-1358 Dorchester Avenue. This firm which is composed of John J. and Denis M. Healy, brothers, was established ten years ago, occupying the premises at Nos. 1347, 1349 and 1351 Dorchester Avenue. The firm recently built the fine four story. brick building which it now occupies and removed to the new commodious quarters in July of the present year. The building is 90 by 120 feet in dimensions, the ground and basement being devoted to the purposes of the business of the firm, while the upper floors are leased as residential suites. The ground floor is used exclusively for the liquor trade of the firm, No. 1356 being used for the wholesale department and No. 1355 for the retail end of the business. The latter is fitted in heavy mahogany and contains a massive bar 75 feet in length, behind which is fine cabinet work, with shining mirrors of rich plate glass. The drinking glasses and decanters are marvels of the class-makers’ art and the whoe effect of the interior is dazzling and entrancing in the extreme.
Under the whole sale department, in the basement, is a fine bowling alley, with three separate alleys for the lovers of that athletic sport. The space under the retail department is devoted to the storage of the enormous tock of goods the firm carries. This stock includes all of the best and highest priced wines, liquors, beers and ales, of both imported and domestic manufacture and the most critical and fastidious connoisseur cannot fail to find the particular beverage he desires I this great and comprehensive stock drawn from the wine markets of the universe. The firm makes a specialty of bottled goods for family and medicinal use. Its trade comes from all part of the city and its vicinity.
Both of the Healy brothers are natives of Ireland. John J. has been a resident of Boston for 25 years and is a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Massachusetts Catholic Order of Foresters. Denis M. belongs to both of those societies and is also an Elk.
