William A. Long
Real estate broker and insurance agent, 368 Washington Street, Dorchester
One of the most prominent and influential representatives of the real estate interests of the district now active in business is William A. Long, whose offices are at No. 368 Washington Street, Dorchester. The establishment of the business, which Mr. Long controls, dates back to 1893, when the firm of George A. Long & Son was organized. The present owner came into possession 10 years ago. Mr. Long does a real estate business of a general character, performing the duties which come within the province of a broker in realty in Dorchester and its vicinity. He buys, sells, rents and exchanges property for his clients, manages the estates of deceased and absent owners and collects rents. He also acts as auctioneer and appraiser of values, when his services in these capacities are required. As an appraiser of property, he is considered one of the best authorities in the region, for his knowledge of values of various kinds of real estate is most profound, from his long experience in dealing in parcels in all parts of this section of the country, and his having a thorough knowledge of building construction and being himself a practical mechanic, having mastered the carpenters’ and builders’ craft in his early youth, makes him a practical judge of property values. Mr. Long makes a specialty of negotiating loans on real estate mortgages and is able to secure funds at short notice and at reasonable rates of interest on Dorchester security. But Mr. Long’s activities in the real estate market are not confined exclusively to Dorchester, for he has large interests in property in the City proper and maintains a branch office at No. 43 Tremont Street, the Carney building, where that’ portion of his business is transacted. No insignificant part of Mr. Long’s energies is devoted to fire insurance. He acts as agent for the Hartford Fire insurance Company, of Hartford, Conn., and the London and Lancashire Insurance Company, of London. England, in this section of the state. He also performs the duties of agent for Walker Bros. Dorchester Express Company and for the Elm Milk.
To reveret to the real estate phase of Mr. Long’s business, it is interesting to note that he has now on his hooks a list of more than 1000 pieces of desirable property in Dorchester and vicinity to sell, rent or exchange. This list includes all kinds of property, like dwelling houses, apartments, stores, buildings and factory buildings, together with improved lots and tracts of land. From this comprehensive list, even the most discriminating purchaser or lessee would be able to find something just suited to meet his critical views, .and anyone desiring the acquirement of Dorhcester property of any kind is advised to consult with Mr. Long without delay. He believes that it is cheaper to buy than pay rent and offers the most favorable terms to those who wish to own their own homes.
Mr. Long was born in this state. He belongs to the Massachusetts Realty company and is a member of the Masonic fraternity and the Odd Fellows.
