Congregation Chevra Shas Synagogue

21431 Former Congregation Chevra Shas, 65 Ashton Street from Google Street View 2021

The name means Society of Mercy.  The congregation was an offshoot of Hadrath Israel at 335 Woodrow Avenue.  Members split off to from Chevra Chas due to their disagreement to the firing of the Rabbi.  The building at 65 Ashton Street was dedicated in 1928.  After a fire in 1970, the congregation moved to Newton.

This building is located near Woodrow Avenue at the corner of Columbine Street and Ashton within a block of the G & G Deli and the congregations at 235 and 220 Woodrow Avenue.

The building at 65 Ashton Street was built according to the practice common to synagogue and church construction (as you can see in the book Urban Exodus) where a “basement” facility was built, and used by the congregation while construction of the main building was (hopefully) completed. The Chevra Chas building never rose above the basement level.
