Edward A. Huebener Brick Collection no. 110 Underhill

No. 5238 Brick from Underhill, home of the May Family.

Edward A. Huebener, a former Board member of the Dorchester Historical Society, was a collector of materials relating to Dorchester history including a very large collection of graphic materials, including prints and photographs, now owned by the Society. His very own contribution to this group of materials was the idea of taking a brick from a house that had been demolished and asking a local illustrator to paint a picture of the house upon the brick. The painted bricks may be viewed at the Dorchester Historical Society

“Underhill” was the home of the May Family.  The house, is located at 69 Adams Street, the corner of Adams and Fox Streets, was built by John Fox in the 1850s, and was probably designed by Luther Briggs, Jr.

The house still stands although it has been altered, and it is now hemmed in by three-deckers.

No. 5464 The map from 1933 shows the property at 69 Adams Street, owned by Tim M. Riordan.

Although the brick was entered in the typewritten list produced in the 1990s as Mount Ida, House of Mayor Collins, the photograph glued to the brick must surely represent Underhill—compare the photographs below to the photograph on the brick.

No.  2520 Photograph in the collections of the Dorchester Historical Society

No. 14951 Photograph published in Dorchester volume II by Anthony Sammarco.
