“I was six but y brother Ike was only three when the Nies family moved into the square white colonial parsonae in Dorchester in the early 1900’s.” – Grace Fletcher Nies in Preacher’s Kids.

Grace Susan Nies Fletcher, fondly known as Susie, was born in Townsend, Massachusetts, and grew up in the parsonages of the New England Conference of the Methodist Church. She is the daughter of Leopold Adolf Nies and Myrtle Rouse. Grace spent her childhood in Dorchester. Leopold served as the pastor of the Standon Avenue Methodist Church in Dorchester from 1902 to 1911.  After her graduation from Boston University in 1917, she continued her studies at Ohio Wesleyan and Columbia Universities. With her husband, Vivian A. Fletcher, and son, Richard (Rick) Nies Fletcher, she lived in South Sudbury, Massachusetts, not far from some of the family stories she describes so vividly in her books.

Mrs. Fletcher made her debut at the age of seven, when some of her verses were published in the Springfield (Mass.) Republican. A few years later she became a contributor to the children’s magazines, “The Youth’s Companion” and “St. Nicholas”. Today her stories and articles appear regularly in such national magazines as, “The Saturday Evening Post”, “Collier’s”, “McCalls”, “The Reader’s Digest”, and “The Woman’s Home Companion”. One of the early stories about her father originally appeared in “The Christian Herald” and was selected by that magazine for its anthology GOLDEN MOMENTS OF RELIGIOUS INSPIRATION. In 1949 Mrs. Fletcher won the Gold Medal of the New England Women’s Press Association for the best magazine short story by a New England writer. Her first book, written in collaboration with Bishop Fred Fisher, was a study of Ghandi.

One of her most beloved books is “In My Father’s House,” an inspiring story of her father’s life as a Methodist minister, husband and father. It is the story of a beloved minister who brought God back into the lives of the many people he watched over.
