Howard Avenue School

Howard Avenue School

The 1910 Atlas shows the Howard Avenue School faces Howard Avenue at the corner of Howard Avenue and Harlowe Street.  The school’s annex, the  Nathaniel Hawthorne School, sits behind the Howard Avenue School.  Both building appear in the 1933 atlas.

The Howard Avenue School, designed by architect George Clough, was constructed  in 1882.

The two school buildings were described as abandoned in a mention in The Boston Globe, September 4, 1937.

The Howard Avenue School – and its annex – The Nathaniel Hawthorne school – which was located just on the other (back) side of the building. They shared a school yard from an entrance from Harlowe St (on the left). In 1949 the Howard Avenue School was taken over by the DENISON HOUSE. The NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE continued on as an elementary school. About 1953 and 54 I attended both 1st and 2nd grade at the Hawthorne and also was a regular at summer programs offered at Denison House. Additionally, my Boy Scout troop held our monthly meetings at Denison House.
