Howard Haven Terhune

No. 18974 Howard Haven Terhne

In 1897 when Howard was 7 years old, his parents, Edward and Emma, purchased the house at 54 Mellen Street (then a different number) from a developer in 1897.  Edward senior was a salesman; the 1910 census listed him as selling shoes.  Howard’s brother, who was 2 at the time, also served in the first World War.

Howard Haven Terhune graduated in 1914 from Tufts College with a bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering.  In his senior year, he and another student won a prize from the Pennsylvania Society of Engineers for a structural design of a steel bridge.  His entry in the Boston directory from 1915 through 1917  listed his occupation as a civil engineer and gave his home address as 54 Mellen Street.  During 1917 he moved to Springfield, MA and lived temporarily at the YMCA. His draft registration card dated June 5, 1917, described him as single, tall, of slender build with blue eyes and brown hair, living at 122 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA.

He joined the service on January 12, 1918, and became Chief Yeoman, assigned to the Naval Aviation Detachment, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at Pensacola, Florida.  He served there until his discharge on September 30, 1921.

In 1929 he and his wife Adelaide were living in Atlanta, GA, where he was a civil engineer for a public utility.  He went on to a career in the federal government, apparently moving to various locations around the country. In the early 1930s they were living in San Jose, CA.  He was listed on the Marine Corps Muster Roll in January, 1946, as Captain. In 1955 he was Head of Industrial Reserves Facilities Section  US Navy Bureau of Yards and Docks, Construction and Real Estate, Management Branch, with salary $9,360.

He died of cardiac arrest at Arlington, VA,  March 23, 1975, at 84 years of age, survived by his wife, Adelaide M. Terhune.  He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
