The Burke High School opened in 1934, named after Jeremiah E. Burke, a superintendent of the Boston Public Schools, who had died in 1931.  Initially the school served girls in the ninth through eleventh grades.  It became coeducational in 1972.  The school lost is accreditation in 1996, and the city pledged to make a major investment facilities and academic programs to regain accreditation in 1998.
