A remarkable instance of what push, energy and strict business integrity will accomplish in a short space of time is show in the case of John J. Hagerty & Co., wholesale and retail dealers in wines and liquors, at No. 1404-1406 Dorchester Avenue, at the corner of Greenwich Street, Dorchester. The business is under the sole ownership of Mr. Hagerty. It was established in aa small way and in narrow quarters in 1896. As the patronage grew with each succeeding year, the facilities were enlarged from time to tome, until the establishment now has a frontage of 100 feet and a depth of 75 feet. The retail liquor department is confined to No. 1404 Dorchester Avenue, on the Greenwich Street corner. This is fitted in hard wood, with lunch counter where luncheons are served and where regular meals and dishes cooked to order can be obtained. The wholesale department is situated on the ground floor at No. 1406, and there is stored one of the choicest selections of wines, liquors, beers, ales, etc., to be found in New England. the concern carries one of the largest stocks of imported and domestic wines, liquors, ales, beers, porters, cordials and Meux’s London stout on sale in this part of the state. It makes a specialty of bottled goods for the family trade and handles all of the leading brands of brandies, whiskies, gins, rums, imported ales, porters, beers and wines. The brands of whiskey carred are straight distilled, absolutely pure and are guaranteed under the national pure food law. Among the different kinds of malt liquors to be had there are bottled “P.B.” ale, King’s “Bohemian” beer, Rueter & Co.’s “Sterling” ale, and all of the products of the Massachusetts Brewereies Company, for family use in bottles and on draught at the bar. Mr. Hagerty is a direct importer of the choicest wines and liquors from Europe. He gives employment to a force of 25 people. His patronage comes from all of the surrounding section of the country, and he ships orders to parts remote. So extensive and comprehensive is the stock of spirituous and malt liquors in the Hagerty establishment that there is scarcely a single kind in the whole world which cannot be found there, no matter what it may be.
Mr. Hagerty was born in Concord, this state. He is one of the most popular and respected citizens in the community and is accounted a resident of Dorchester of the very highest type.
