The playground at Savin Hill Beach was designated a Hero Square for Joseph W. McConnell.

Capt. Joseph W. McDonnell  was born in North Adams on June 17, 1877.  He graduated from Williams College in 1898 and received the degree LL B infrom Boston University in 1901. On May 19, 1914 he was commissioned a second lieutenant in Co. A., 9th Infantry.  He went with that outfit to the Mexican border.  He went overseas in 1917.  He was a former commander of Co. A, 101st Infantry.  He was killed leading his company action at St. Mihiel, September 12, 1918.

Captain Joseph W. McConnell Monument

Dedicated September 11, 1921, this monument consisted of a large round plaque on the stone that is surrounded by an iron fence near Malibu Beach. In 1918 Captain McConnell was killed in action in France in World War I.

The large round plaque that was installed at the dedication has disappeared. A poor copy of a photo of the plaque appears in a Boston Globe article from 1921. If anyone has a better photo, please get in touch.
