Established 2003, the school was named after Mrs. Lilla G. Frederick, a community activist in Boston.

Mrs. Lilla G. Frederick was a positive influence in Boston and Massachusetts for many years. Lilla helped found and then served as the President and Char of Project RIGHT, Inc. (Rebuild and Improve Grove Hall Together).

In addition, Lilla was the Chair of the Boston Caribbean Foundation, Inc.; Secretary of Grove Hall Elder Housing Advocacy Group (GHEHAG); member of ABCD Family Service Center (Roxbury); member of the Blue Hill Avenue Initiative Task Force; and a volunteer at the New Boston Pilot Middle School. She was also instrumental in the designing of the Middle School.

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Lilla had a deep belief in the importance of education, and she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Northeastern University, and a Masters Degree in Management from Lesley University.

Lilla’s contributions gained her recognition from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Governor’s Council for oustanding public service, City of Boston Resident Association Award for Public Service, and from the United States Department of Justice Office Program for Residents Grassroots Associations. Most recently she was the 2005 recipient of the Drum Major Award from the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast Committee.

Lilla served as board member of Environmental Partnerships, where her leadership was especially important in developing opportunities for churches to help landscape new affordable housing. She was also responsible for getting large flower pots to beautify Devon Street.

In addition to her civic inivolvement, Lilla was a longtime and active member o St. Paul’s Cathedral, where she used her considerable organizational skills and outgoing grace to help make the Cathedral an inviting and welcoming place. She also planned and organized an annual Thanksgiving meal for homeless people in downtown Boston.

Lilla accomplished all this while also raising her son, Arthur Frederick, Jr., of whom she was fiercely proud. Arthur has continued his mother’s commitment to helping others. He is currently an Army Sergeant stationed in Iraq and is helping that nation rebuild and restore itself, just as his mother helped rebuild and restore her neighborhood and city.
