Receiving Tomb, formerly Mr. Swett’s Tomb.

Child of Zebedee Cook’s, November 23, 1826, 7 m.

(Placed in the tomb when it belonged to Mr. Swett)

The Receiving Tomb was used to store bodies until the final grave site could be prepared.  Most often, this was during the winter months when the ground was frozen, and graves could not be dug.
