Richard Daniel Cheney United States Marine Corps 23 November 1948 – 9 May 1969 Richard Daniel Cheney was born on November 23, 1948 to Daniel L. and Evelyn E. Cheney. He resided on Barrington Rd. in Dorchester, MA and graduated from English High School of Boston in 1966. Richard showed his love for our country when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on April 25, 1968. Private First Class (Pfc.) Cheney proudly served in 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV. On May 9, 1969 the Battalion was on a search and clear operation near the My Hiep village in Quang Nam Province. Contact was made with a large force of the North Vietnamese Army. Air strikes were called and the Marines launched an assault, which forced the enemy to flee. During the fire fights Pfc. Cheney was killed by gunshot wounds and third degree burns to the body. For his heroism, Pfc. Cheney was awarded the Purple Heart, Vietnam Gallantry Cross, and Vietnam Civil Actions Medal. His body is buried at Cedar Grove.
