PFC Robert J. Cunningham United States Marine Corps 6 February 1951 – 10 July 1970 Robert James Cunningham was born to Thomas J. and Mary E. Cunningham on February 6, 1951. He lived on Geneva Ave. in Dorchester with his parents and four siblings. Robert demonstrated his devotion to our country when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on September 15, 1969. Private First Class (Pfc.) Cunningham proudly served as an Assaultman with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV. He was stationed near the An Loc village in the Que Son District of Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. On July 10, 1970 his Outpost was attacked by an enemy force bearing hand grenades and automatic weapons. A reaction force quickly responded, but they were too late. The enemy had already fled with a PRC-25 radio and an M-16 rifle, leaving three of the Marines dead and one wounded. Pfc. Cunningham was one of the casualties. For his extraordinary heroism in combat and outstanding achievements in civil affairs Pfc.

Cunningham lived at 393 Geneva Avenue. He graduated from St. Peter’s Grammar School and South Boston High School. Active in athletics, he led St. Ann’s Hockey Club to the CYO playoffs I 1968.  He arrived in Vietnam in March 1970,
