Street Murals

Street Murals

No. 2723 Grates on Washington Street, 1990s

Art in the urban context comes in many forms. The murals painted on brick walls and on the grates of store-fronts are in one sense fleeting, since they will fade and wear away over time. To the viewer, the painters are anonymous, but they have contributed enormously to the appearance of our streetscapes. By using a found surface as their canvas, these unknown artists have provoked us to think about the meaning of their creations.
