Congregation Tikvas Israel, 114 Souther Avenue

21872 114 Southern Avenue, former home of Tikvas Israel

The congregation was founded by Jews in the Franklin Park area as an outgrowth of New Dorchester Hebrew School.  Tikvas Israel commissioned Weinbaum and Wexler to design a small synagogue at 114 Southern Avenue in 1925.  It was opened in time for High Holidays in September 1926.  The names on the cornerstone are Mr. and Mr. B.Ancoff.

This building had a short life as a temple because by 1945, it had become the Dorchester Hebrew School, which served the community until its sale to a church in 1970.  In 2008 it is the Prayer Room Pentecostal Church of Faith.
