The intersection of Ballou Avenue and Jones Avenue was designated a Hero Square in 1949 for Edward Shurin.

Shurin lived at 85 Ballou Avenue, Dorchester.  He was killed at twenty years of age in Belgium at the Battle of the Bulge on January 17, 1945.  He served with the the 389th Infantry Regiment of the 7 Division.  He studied at Massachusetts State College. He received A.S.T.P training at the College of the City of New York and was sent overseas in October 1944.
