The intersection of Columbia Road and Buttonwood Street was designated a Hero Square for Howard J. Kane.

United States Army 6 May 1944 – 7 February 1946 Howard J. Kane was born on August 24, 1920 in Dorchester, MA. He was inducted into the United States Army on May 6, 1944. Private First Class (PFC) Kane proudly served our country while assigned to the 4th Division Infantry Company. Private Kane was reported missing in action on February 6, 1945 and subsequently presumed dead on February 7, 1946. For the heroism he demonstrated while protecting our country Private Kane was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. He was survived by his wife, Nora T. Kane a resident of Dorchester.

At the time of his service, Kane lived at 90 /buttonwood Street.  He was inductd into the service in May 1944 and shipped overseas with the 22d Regiment of the 4th Division in October 1944.
