James E. Oxley United States Air Force 7 May, 1939 – 29 November, 1966 James E. Oxley was born on May 7, 1939 in Raleigh, North Carolina. After moving to Dorchester, he joined the United States Air Force. James served as a First Lieutenant in Vietnam with the 421st Tactical Fighter Squadron, 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, 7th Air Force. On November 29, 1966, Lieutenant Oxley died in Gia Dinh, Vietnam, while serving his country. James was survived by his mother, Lugenia Oxley a Dorchester resident and is buried in the Arlington National Cemetery. 1st Lt. Oxley’s name can be found, memorialized, on Panel 12E, Row 122 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Lt. Oxley lived at 12 Arcadia Street.  He became a father three weeks before his death as one of 27 killed in a crash of a C-47 transport plane outside of Saigon Airport. Lt. Oxley was a biochemist, a graduate of Fisk University at Nashville. He had been working a master’s degree.
