John B. DeValles United States Army 1879 – 12 May 1920 Joao Baptista DeValles was born in St. Miquel, Azores in 1879. When he was two his family moved to the United States and settled in New Bedford. Fr. John enlisted in the United States Army in 1918. First Lieutenant DeValles served as a chaplain to the 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Division.He spent much of his time in No Man’s Land searching for wounded and dying soldiers, Allied or German, he was called the Angel of the Trenches. One day he did not return. This caused concern, a search party was sent out for him. He was found wounded and unconscious by the side of a dead soldier that he was trying to aid. He continued to serve despite his injuries causing his health to deteriorate. DeValles was honorably discharged in 1919, his injuries continued to plague him, particularly the mustard gas he had breathed in. He was in and out of the hospital until his death on May 12, 1920. DeValles was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

Fr de Valles graduated from the New Bedford High School and attended Benton’s Business College. He studied law at St. Charles’ College, Baltimore;  then he entered the seminary at Montreal, Canada, He finished his education for the priesthood at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton.
