The intersection of Dorchester Avenue and Gibson Street was designated a Hero Square in 1935.

Ensign O’Connell’s family home was at 228 8th Street, South Boston.  He was attached to the U.S.S. Bridgeport and died on October 11, 1918, of pneumonia at Brest, France, during World War I.  He had been recommended three times to Washington for courage and bravery.  He had been a member of the police force attached to the Hanover Street Station. Mayor Curley planted a tree on Boston Common in his remembrance in 1925.
