John L. Motley (1814-1877), an American historian and diplomat, was born in Dorchester, Mass. He graduated from Harvard Univerity in 1831 and continued his studies in Germany. Motley served as the U.S. Minister to Austria (1861-69) and to Great Britain (1869-77). He is the author of numerous historical works including: The Rise of the Dutch Republic and Merry Mount, A Romance of the Massachusetts Colony. He died in England and is buried in London.

This school was operating in the 1980s but was closed and converted to condominiums in the 1990s.
