John Marshall (1755-1835), the fourth Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, was born in Virginia. He served as a Congressman and as Secretary of State until his appointment as Chief Justice by President John Adams in 1801. Marshall did most to shape the foundations of constitutional law.
