Canavan graduated from Boston Latin School in 1930 and Harvard in 1934.  He went overseas with the Americal Division.  He became haed of the Army specialized training program at Boston College and later director of the INformatn and education office of the 1st Service Command.  On his discharge from the Army in 1947, he was named military drill instructor in the BostonSschools, a position which he held at the time of his death.

Col. John R. Canavan, 37, of 35 Sidney Street died December 17, 1948.  He was a one-time battalion commander in the Americal Division and veteran of 16 months fighting on Guadalcanal.  He had been ill more than a year from the effects of malaria which developed into multiple sclerosis.
