Mary Hall Chapin, 1847-1935

Mary Hall Chapin, 1847-1935

Mary Hall, daughter of Rev. Nathaniel Hall and Sarah E. Hall was born in Dorchester on October 16, 1847.  She married in Dorchester Edward Fisher Chapin of Chicago on June 18, 1914.

Her father and mother were true New Englanders.  Simple in their tastes and ways of living, deeply religious, conscientious and devotedly concerned with the welfare of mankind, they raised Mary in these same ideals.

She had a great sense of humor, making her a good companion and “persona grata” with young people.  She loved to garden and was successful with an amazing assortment of exotic flowers, sharing them with her friends and through her Flower Mission.  Her house was always open, extending welcome to many friends and neighbors.

In the Church, she was a faithful attendant and a local member and worker in the Sunday School, Benevolent Society and the Women’s Alliance.

She died on March 28, 1935.  In her will she left one thousand dollars for the beautification and upkeep of the grounds of the meeting house of which her father had been a minister from 1835 to 1875, demonstrating her devotion to the Church and her love of beauty and order.
