Robert Hayes was born in Albany, N.Y. and came to Dorchester as a boy.  His home was at 1 Mather Street.  He played a prominent part with the St. Ambrose nine of the Catholic Club League.  He sailed overseas in September 1918 as a second lieutenant.  He was promoted to Captain about a week before he was killed.  Captain Robert Hayes, formerly of I Company of the 101st Infantry, was killed in early October 1918.  Hayes had served in all the campaigns of the old 9th, including service at the Mexican border and Spanish-American War.
