Doherty was born n Roxbury n September 4, 1894. He graduated from the Boston Latin School in 1912, where he was one of the foremost players on the football team. He entered Harvard and made the freshman eleven. Lieutenant John Andrew Doherty was attached to the 1st Division. When he received his commission, he was assigned to Co L of the 18th Regulars. He was killed during the second battle of Marne, sometime between July 18 and 24, 1918.
